THE TRANSTREK KENYA CLASSIC

Overview

A fantastic 12 day safari visiting all the classic parks and reserves in southern Kenya, including; Amboseli, Tsavo West, the Great Rift Valley lakes of Nakuru and Naivasha and the iconic Maasai Mara; providing you with plenty of opportunities to see all the Big Five, encounter large herds of elephant and watch big cats patrol the savannah plains! As well as game drives, activities will include a boat safari on Lake Naivasha, a nature walk on Crescent Island and a day sightseeing in Nairobi, including a visit to the David Sheldrick elephant orphanage. The camps and lodges have been selected based on their service and comfort level and also on their locations within the parks and reserves.

​Day by day itinerary in brief

Day ​1 & 2 - Amboseli, Ol Tukai Lodge​
Depart Nairobi by road for Amboseli National Park (5 hours), a really fantastic park with great views of Mount Kilimanjaro and is one of the best places in Africa where you can encounter large herds of elephants up close! You'll arrive in time for lunch at the Ol Tukai Lodge, one of the best places to watch elephants with the backdrop of Mount Kilimanjaro. 

Day 3 & 4​ - Tsavo West, Serena Kilaguni
Continue your safari onto Tsavo West, a huge park of over 7,000 km sq. and is made up of woodland, savannahs and riverine habitats and is home to many species including thousands of elephants, leopard, cheetah, wild dogs, crocodiles and over 600 species of bird. Accommodation is at Serena Kilaguni Lodge located inside the park, a stone-built safari lodge wuth great views of the surrounding hills and overlooks its own water hole.

​Day 5 & 6 - Tsavo West to Nairobi - Anga Afrika
Head back to Nairobi for a day sight-seeing, visiting the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust elephant orphanage, the Giraffe Centre and Karen Blixen museum. Accommodation is at the luxury Anga Afrika tented camp, a small camp on the outskirts of the city, set in a peaceful site with lots of trees and bird-life with a focus on service and good food.

Day 7 - Lake Nakuru - Sopa Lodge
Depart Nairobi for the Premium Lake Nakuru (3 hours) where you may see over 400 different species of birds including large numbers of pelicans and sometimes flamingoes. Nakuru is a great place to get up close to white rhino and you can also see the rare Rothschild giraffe here, which you can identify by its white lower legs that look like socks! You'll be staying at Sopa lodge, situated at the top of a ridge and has stunning views over the park and lake. 

Day 8 - Lake Naivasha - Sopa Resort
Visit Lake Naivasha where you can see hippos and many species of birds including fish eagles and pelicans, activities here include a boat safari and a bush walk. Accommodation is at Sopa Resort, located close to the lake shore where you can find wildlife wandering around such as bushbuck, zebra and giraffe. ​

​Day 9 to 11 - Maasai Mara - Sarova Mara Game Camp
Spend three days on game drives exploring the Maasai Mara, rich in biodiversity and home to a large variety of bird species and wildlife, this savannah reserve offers great game viewing and bird watching opportunities. The Maasai Mara is regarded as the jewel of Kenya’s wildlife reserves and is home to the annual wildebeest migration, which involves over 1.5 million animals! Accomodation is at the Sarova Mara Game Camp, a luxury tented camp situated inside the Maasai Mara national reserve.

​Day 12 - Maasai Mara to Nairobi​
After an early morning game drive, you’ll head back to camp for breakfast, then late morning you’ll head back to Nairobi with a picnic lunch (5.5 hours). Alternatively stay for lunch at the lodge and fly back to Nairobi in the afternoon (optional extra). End of tour.
