Overview

This 8-day safari takes you off the beaten track to the wild savannahs of Meru, then across the Kenyan central highlands and along the Rift Valley visiting the Menangai Crater and both Lake Nakuru and Lake Naivasha before arriving at the iconic grassland plains of the Maasai Mara. This safari provides many opportunities to see the Big Five, as well as many species of bird and other plains mammals; there will be game drives in Meru, Lake Nakuru and the Maasai Mara, a guided nature-walk at the Menangai Crater, and a boat safari and bush walk at Lake Naivasha.

​Day-by-day itinerary in brief

Day 1 & 2 – Meru, Ikweta Safari Camp
Depart Nairobi for Meru, a classic savannah wilderness with a diversity of habitats ranging from semi-arid, to riverine, forest, swamplands and grasslands where you can find cheetah, Grevy’s zebra, gerenuk and the distinctive reticulated giraffe as well as the Big Five. Accommodations is at Ikweta Safari Camp, a small tented camp with spacious en-suite tents. 

Day 3 & 4 – Menengai Crater & Lake Nakuru, Maili Saba Camp
Spend a day exploring the Menengai Crater on a bush walk, the next morning you will head into the Premium Lake Nakuru National Park for a day of game drives, where you can see over 400 different species of birds, white rhinos, the rare Rothschild giraffe. Accommodation is at Maili Saba camp located on the rim of the crater with stunning views.

Day 5 - Lake Naivasha, Elsamere Lodge
After breakfast you’ll head down the Rift Valley to lake Naivasha and the Elsamere lodge, where you’ll arrive in time for lunch. The lodge is in a lovely location by the lake and often has wildlife wandering around the grounds such as zebra and giraffe.  After lunch you’ll take a boat safari across the lake where you may see hippos and many species of birds including fish eagles and pelicans, you will also stop off at Crescent Island for a guided bush walk.

Day 6 & 7 - Maasai Mara, Julia’s River Camp
Spend two days in the Maasai Mara, a reserve rich in biodiversity and home to a large variety of bird species and wildlife and is regarded as the jewel of Kenya’s wildlife reserves and is home to the annual wildebeest migration, which involves over 1.5 million animals!  Accommodation is at Julia’s River Camp, located on a quiet bend of the Talek river, each tent is en-suite with views across the river. 

Day 8. Maasai Mara to Nairobi
After an early morning game drive, you will head back to camp for a relaxed breakfast, before heading back to Nairobi by road with a picnic lunch (5 hours). End of tour.
