Day by day itinerary

Day 1 & 2
Meru - Ikweta Safari Camp
You’ll depart Nairobi for Meru (5 hours by road), a classic savannah wilderness with a diversity of habitats ranging from semi-arid, riverine, forest and swamplands to grasslands. You’ll arrive for lunch at Ikweta Safari Camp, which is a small budget tented camp; each tent has an en suite bathroom and private veranda, there is a real focus on affordable comfort, with all meals cooked to order!  After lunch you will head into Meru for a game drive, there are some fantastic game viewing opportunities here including cheetah, Grevy’s zebra, gerenuk and the distinctive reticulated giraffe as well as the Big Five. You’ll spend the next day exploring Meru, with its great views of Mount Kenya, savannah wilderness, riverine habitats and prominent inselbergs, notably Mughwango and Leopard Rock; offering some great photo opportunities. Meru is also the former home of the Adamson’s and Elsa the lioness.

Day 3 & 4
Menengai Crater, Maili Saba Camp
After breakfast you will leave for the Menangai Crater, on the way you could stop at the Thompson water falls, it is a bit of a tourist trap but once you get away from the hawkers it is a very beautiful place. You will arrive at the Maili Saba camp for lunch, which is a small camp located on the rim of the crater and has stunning views. The camp is a budget camp but offers good comfort in their bandas and good food and is actually run by a foundation that sponsors education projects and the camp has pretty good reviews on Trip Advisor. After lunch you’ll be taken on a nature walk through the woodland where you will see a huge variety of birds. The next morning you will head into the Premium Lake Nakuru National Park, where you could see over 400 different species of birds, white rhinos, the rare Rothschild giraffe and other plains mammals such as lion, zebra and buffalo. You will spend the entire day in the park with a picnic lunch before heading back to camp for dinner.

Day 5
Lake Naivasha - Sopa Lodge
After breakfast you’ll head down the Rift Valley to lake Naivasha and the Sopa Resort, where you’ll arrive in time for lunch. The lodge is in a lovely location by the lake and often has wildlife wandering around the grounds such as zebra and giraffe. The main building has an interior garden, fireplace and low comfy leather sofas and the rooms themselves are spacious, Swahili style chalets either with a balcony or a glass fronted lounge area for relaxing and wildlife viewing. After lunch you’ll take a boat safari across the lake where you may see hippos and many species of birds including fish eagles and pelicans. You’ll could also stop at Crescent Island for a guided nature walk where you can get close to some of the less dangerous plains mammals! Then retire to the lodge for the evening where you can take a swim, have dinner and watch the hippos come up from the Lake to graze in Sopa’s grounds.

You’ll arrive in time for lunch at the Ol Moran tented camp, which is a budget camp situated a short distance to the east of the Mara reserve. The camp’s guide can take you on a short walk to the nearby Lenganishu Hills that will give you a great view of the vast Serengeti plains before you head out on a late afternoon game drive. You will spend the following day on game drives in the Masai Mara or head out on a full day game drive with a picnic lunch, you are not restricted to times and length of game drives with us and you can spend the whole day out exploring the reserve if you wish tracking down all the Big Five.
